Spray tans for beginners
If you’ve never had a spray tan before, it can be a little scary. Especially if you’ve seen the episode of FRIENDS where Ross ends up with a lot more than a ‘Tahitian glow’.
But once you get past the first-time nerves, you’ll be hooked on how easy it is to get top-to-toe bronzed. So to make sure you’re fully prepared and ready to get the best results, here are some handy pointers.
The night before your spray tan, exfoliate your skin in the shower, paying extra attention to dry spots like the elbows and knees. Find a loose-fitting, dark outfit that’s easy to slip on, such as a navy t-shirt dress or black maxi. This is so you can get dressed quickly after your spray tan, without rubbing off any colour or causing streak marks. As for footwear, thongs are a good option. Before heading to your spray tan, remove all your make-up and make sure you’re not wearing deodorant, perfume or scented body products – these will block the colour from the skin. If you have long locks, take a hair tie with you.
When you arrive at the salon, you’ll be taken into a spray-tanning booth and given a shower cap and disposable G-string. The beauty therapist will leave the booth so you can get undressed and put both props on. Make sure the G-string leaves your bottom uncovered but isn’t riding too high up on your back. Tie your hair up and put the shower cap on so it’s covering your hair, but tucked behind your ears. When the beauty therapist re-enters the room, don’t be afraid to tell her it’s your first time getting a spray tan. That way, they’ll know to give you clear direction on how to position your body during the tan (although they usually do this regardless).
Before the spraying starts, the beauty therapist may get you to put some moisturiser on your nails and knees to prevent tan build-up. Then, they’ll ask what colour tan you would like. If in doubt, always go for a lighter shade, or ask the beauty therapist what shade would suit your skin tone. Once you’ve chosen a shade, the spraying will begin. All you have to do is listen to the beauty therapist who will tell you when to put your arm up, move to the side, hold your breath while your face is being done, and so on. The spray will feel a little cold, but won’t be too wet or uncomfortable. The whole process should take between 10-20 minutes.
Once your spray tan is done, the beauty therapist may spray some air (using the same spray gun) over your body so the tan dries faster. After that, it’s time to get dressed. If you can get around sans bra, definitely do so to avoid any colour rubbing off. You may feel a little damp and sticky, so it’s also a good idea to leave your hair up. Once you’ve slipped on your outfit and popped on your thongs, you’re ready to go. Depending on the brand/type of tan you get, you’ll need to allow it to develop for a certain period of time. Ask the beauty therapist how long you need to wait before showering. You should also try not to sweat too much during this period (so don’t go for a run straight after your spray tan!).
You’ll be able to see some colour straight away and as time goes on, your tan will get darker and darker. But don’t stress if it’s too dark as some colour will wash off once you have a shower.
