3 women tell all about the ageing process

When it comes to the ageing process, bh beauties tend to have a pretty good head on their shoulders.
You only have to look at how real women feel about ageing to realise that there are plenty of perks in the pipeline – and many of us can’t wait to capitalise on them!
RELATED: 28 pieces of advice for every woman
That being said, getting older can still seem a bit daunting for some – myself included (and I’m only 26!). So, I reached out to three mature women (who I consider role models) to pick their brains on the topic: health expert and founder of Get Lean, Dr Joanna McMillan; founder of endota spa, Melanie Gleeson; and makeup artist and Max Factor ambassador, Liz Kelsh.
Below, they share their experiences of getting older and embracing ageing, as well as their expectations for the future (which, suffice to say, look very bright!)…
DR JOANNA MCMILLAN – health expert and founder of Get Lean
How old are you?
43.
What do you enjoy most about getting older?
I worry less about other people and I am more comfortable in my own skin. My career has progressed as well, and I feel as if the years of experience and knowledge I have gained show in my work. In fact, my work has never been more interesting! I am more confident and know I can’t please everyone.
Has ageing been what you thought it would be? Has anything surprised you?
I feel the same inside, I’m the same person. Time passes more quickly though. I’m still waiting for that moment where I catch my reflection in a shop window and see an old lady staring back at me!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Putting my two children through high school. I’ve taken some risks with my career to push my business. Ideally I would like to still be working in another 20 years. Then, when I get to my 60s and 70s, I would love to be able to travel more often. My parents live in Scotland so it would be nice to see more of them.
What is your one piece of advice for young women who are worried about ageing?
I think older women actually need to stand up and be better role models, and show that we can age gracefully without being so concerned about aesthetics. Young girls are beating themselves up worrying about grey hairs, when actually it’s a privilege for us to grow older and live long, healthy lives. Focus on health, wellness and vitality and eating well. The wrinkles are a sign of a life well-lived!
How has your health and fitness routine changed as you’ve gotten older?
My fitness routine has definitely changed. I used to teach 14 exercise classes a week, but now I focus more on lots of long walks and yoga. Because of this I have a lighter diet and also try to eat more veggies. I focus on getting that mind-body balance. A healthy lifestyle is always a work in progress!
What's your all-time favourite beauty product?
I am careful about what I put on my skin and prefer natural beauty products. I love Lucas Papaw Ointment ($6.60, amcal.com.au), 100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream ($44.95, nourishedlife.com.au) and Nude by Nature BB 5-in-1 Miracle Cream! I am also a big believer in SPF – I wear SunSense Daily Face SPF 50+ every day.

Dr. Joanna says it best. " I worry less about other people and I am more comfortable in my own skin". I feel the words hitting me like a truck. I should really care less about other people and start looking out for myself more.

Ive never understood people who wont say how old they are. I used to feel stunned that my Gran would never say. One day I asked her why she wasnt proud of her years and I think I must have got her thinking as from then on if someone asked she would proudly tell them her age and then bask in their astonishment. She always said that she wanted to live to be 104 but when she was 98 she lost her sight so could no longer read or watch tv and by the time she was just past her 99th birthday her hearing became so bad that she could no longer talk on the phone. She told me that she was done with life and figured she would make it to 100 just so she could say she made it and then she was checking out. I asked her about 104 and she said "No...one day is much like the other and Im done now...I will do my 100 and then quietly leave" .....she passed away in the early hours of her 100th birthday. Having spoken to her about this and being aware of her plan I sent her 100 fragrant flowers for her birthday but I had sent them 2 weeks early so she got to enjoy them :D

As I have gotten older I've become less concerned about what other people think and just focusing on what makes me happy

All three of these women are extremely inspiring and being 45 myself, I totally agree with everything that they have said. Being more comfortable in your own skin, is probably the biggest thing for me.

Thank you for the article Beth. We actually had a similar conversation around the Christmas dining table with my husbands grandma. She used to be a nudist and she was telling us how her mother used to wear a scarf over her face and neck and wear gloves every time she went out. Her mother had lovely soft hands. Grandma on the other hand mentioned she had sun damage in places she dare not mention and if she had her time over again would rethink things. Grounded she said there is no turning back the clock for her, though there is time for us grand daughter in laws. She told us to wear sunscreen each day and moisturize.

I love this article Beth, well done! It’s very interesting. We all have different ideas about ageing gracefully. I’m the big 60 and realise I just have to embrace how I look. You can read all the advice on how to stop yourself from looking older, but let’s face it, eventually it happens to all of us. We can only do so much, makeup wise, so to me the main thing I try to concentrate on is skincare. In particular, using sunscreen, not spending too much time in the sun, and keeping your skin hydrated with whatever moisturiser works for you. My sense of humour tends to help me though too. My old Scottish Mother was always teased by a wrinkly, skinny Sister-in-Law for being a bit chubby. After years of torment she eventually retorted, I’m happier to be a bit chubby, than “wizened”

There is way too much focus on looks nowadays. The rise of social media and obsession with selfies has only made this much worse. There are much bigger issues in this world to spend time on than perfecting that selfie shot endlessly.

We live in such a superficial society. The older I get the less I care about other people's expectations of how I should look. I'm trying to be more focused on a healthier lifestyle which hopefully will reflect on the outside. I'd like to get older with fewer ailments and continue having loads of energy and try and live to the full.

smart thinking, too many people care too much about what others think - if you are healthy then happiness should follow :)

So true BeautyO - the older I get I don't worry about ageing these days. I remember worrying in my early 30s but as I reached each milestone, I decided I just wanted to age gracefully like my mum (who looked fabulous till age 83).
If you look at some of these women that have all these botox and facelifts, some look hideous now and now wish they didn't even start the whole process.
Nope, not for me.

I would love to see more older women becoming role models for the younger generation. I have a mentor who I always go for life/work advice. She just gives it straight to you. I've learnt one thing from 2017 - the generation I'm from leans so much on social media for everything!

The most ageing thing to me is someone refusing to accept that we age - ageing gracefully is the best way to make sure we are doing what we can to accept the process but do it with style.

I am quite happy with the way I age. I found that it is more difficult to keep the weight off and physically more challenging to exercise, but I am happy with how I look most of the time.

Thankyou for sharing your story with us all. We all grow old one day & like most people they would embrace it I on the other hand am not terrified by it, it's just I don't want to get old & wrinkly but I also know that you can't turn back time you just go forward so I go forward being happy, Healthy, Positive, Energetic & full of life. I will look to the stars with full of beans that's my motto.
