5 top tips to looking younger
Trying to fight fine lines and wrinkles? Want your skin to be firmer? Looking to even out your skin tone and soften your skin? Want to protect your skin against sun damage? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then you need to get on board with these simple skin-saving steps that will not only help you sport a younger-looking complexion, but will no doubt make you feel a whole lot better too!
1.) Avoid environmental damage
If you guys had seen as many presentations on the damaging effects of the sun as I have in my time as a beauty ed, I guarantee you never again step outside without adequate sun protection. Not only is the sun the number one cause of premature ageing (think fine lines, dehydrated skin, pigmentation and discolouration – any takers? I didn’t think so!), but it can also cause permanent cell damage and skin cancer.
If you want to look younger for longer it’s imperative that you protect your skin from sun damage by using an SPF on a daily basis – even when it’s cold or overcast, as skin-harming UVA rays are still present even when the sun seems to be in hiding. Just remember, UVA rays age you; UVB rays burn you.
2.) Up your antioxidants
You know those pesky free radicals? Those annoyingly invisible attackers of your skin? Well although you can’t see them, you can help to fight them off by increasing your antioxidant intake, inside and out. A great source of antioxidants is anything high in vitamins C (such as citrus fruits, kiwi, and strawberries) or E (such as cereals, sunflower seeds, almonds and fish liver oil). Carotene, which can be found in foods like sweet potato, carrots, and leafy greens, is also a great antioxidant as it not only helps to fight free radicals, but it also helps to boost the levels of vitamin A in your system, which is a known age fighter.
3.) Get savvy with your skin care
Once you’ve got your antioxidants sorted on the inside, give your skin an extra helping hand with a boost of anti-ageing active ingredients on the outside. L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Total Repair 10 Daily Moisturiser (more fondly known as ‘TR10’), is packed with 10 skin-protecting active ingredients that fight the signs of ageing and UV damage in one simple step.
Included in the formulation of this hard-working, multi-tasking face cream is pro-retinol A, L’Oreal Paris’ most renowned wrinkle-fighting active ingredient, and soy extract, yeast extract and Fibrelastyl, which combined stimulate your skin’s natural lifters to plump and firm your skin from within. Add to that a potent blend of vitamin B3, pro-vitamin B5, cellular renewal booster, elastin and SPF 15 UVA/UVB protection and you’ve got yourself one kick-ass age fighter! With regular use you can expect to see reduced wrinkles, firmer, smoother and more refined skin, a more hydrated, radiant and even-toned complexion, plus the reduction of dark spots. All from the one product available at your nearest supermarket – what’s not to love about it?
4.) Lower your stress levels
Have you ever noticed how ragged and run down you look when you’re stressed out? That’s because the essential nutrients your skin needs are being sent to your vital organs instead, decreasing cell renewal and weakening the skin’s natural barrier function – making you more susceptible to environmental damage, moisture loss and skin irritations. Stress also generally leads to lack of sleep, which in turn robs your skin cells of those precious hours in which it goes to work repairing damage and restructuring healthy, functioning cells.
If you’re feeling stressed out, try to examine what it is in your life that’s causing the stress and take little steps to rectify the situation (it’s a lot easier than making a giant change, which can seem overwhelming in itself). If it all seems too much, don’t be afraid to seek the help of your GP or a therapist – your mind, body and skin will thank you for it!
5.) Have more ‘me’ time
If you live your life solely based on other people’s needs chances are you’re going to end up feeling stressed and exhausted (which, as mentioned above, is guaranteed to take its toll on your skin). Everyone needs time to relax and regroup – not only does it allow your mind to clear so you can be more effective in the tasks you undertake, but the relaxation will also leave your skin looking less ragged and more youthful. Choose something you love doing and make sure you do it once a week – it can be as simple as reading a good book in the bath, going to a yoga class, popping out for a 30 minute walk, or catching up with your friends for a cup of tea and a gossip. Booking in for a soothing massage once a month will also allow you to unwind and the results will show on your face!
