Washing your hair every day? 7 reasons it's doing more harm than good

Do you wash you hair every day? Do you wake up early every morning just to get your shampoo fix? Can you not stand the thought of second day hair?
Well stop it. Now.
Because while you may think that washing your hair every day is doing it the world of good, it’s actually doing the opposite.
I know it’s hard. I used to wash my hair every day too. But ever since finding out about the following seven reasons not to, I’ve learned to embrace the idea of a sleep-in and a shorter shower.
Reason #1: your colour won’t fade as much
When you shampoo, you’re effectively opening your hair cuticles. The hair cuticles are what hold on to colour, so by opening and washing them every day you’re losing double the amount of colour you would if you only shampooed every second day.
Reason #2: a little grease is good
Do you curls fall within five minutes? Does your ponytail droop unless you tie it as tight as possible? A little grease and dirt in your hair makes styling so much easier. It helps to hold the hair where you want it, meaning less time to style and less hair spray.
Reason #3: you won’t be stripping your hair’s natural oils
By washing your hair every day, the natural oils produced by the hair and scalp are being stripped. These oils are what keep your hair healthy and shiny. If you give them a chance to work, you may just find you don’t have to wash your hair as often.
Reason #4: you’ll tame frizz and increase shine
Even just one day without washing gives the hair’s natural oils a chance to shine. Not to mention it helps to hold down flyaways and tame frizz. If you have frizzy hair and you’re washing it every day, that’s a big part of the problem.
Reason #5: you’ll be doing less heat styling
If every time you wash your hair you have to also blow dry, straighten or curl it, that’s a lot of heat damage you could be avoiding. If you wash it less, you’ll need to style it less, meaning fewer split ends and less dryness.
Reason #6: you’ll save money
Shampoos and conditioners aren’t cheap. And if you’re using both every day, they’re running out a lot faster. So save yourself some money and make your products last twice as long by using them half as much.
Reason #7: you’ll have less product build up
Most people wash their hair every day because they say it’s oily and greasy if they don’t. But the oil and grease could actually be a result of product-build up rather than not washing it. By using shampoo and conditioner every day, the residue from each is building up in the hair, making it greasier and heavier. When you first stop washing it, your hair may take a while to adjust but once it does, you’ll notice less oil and grease and less need to wash.

i wash my hair every 3rd day. before i used to wash it with TRESemmé Deep Cleansing Shampoo and conditioner but i felt that its damaged my hair and i got as results of split end hair fall and dandruff. so now I've swith it with dove shampoo and conditioner. I've just started it so can't say anything in 1-2 uses.

I to use to wash my hair every day .Sometimes twice a day if I was going out at night as well. I stopped doing that because I heard of the more you wash the more you need to .and the damage it dose.. well I can say it took a couple of weeks to feel ok with it and my hair to get use to it .and now I wash my hair once or twice a week and my hair is still long and doesn't get grease.

I was a daily hair washer. Now my little girl has come along I don't have time to spend washing and blow drying my hair every day. I have to admit my hair is looking better for not washing it daily. I can now go 2 - 3 days without washing it. It was hard at first, my hair looked like it needed the daily washing and I missed the clean freshness but now l'm use it it and more importantly so is my hair.

I only recently learnt of this from my hairdresser. And there I was stating that I was my hair daily so proudly. I took her advice and used a clarifying shampoo and my hair doesn't feel so oily and my scalp doesn't feel greasy anymore.

I'm scared to leave my hair unwashed if I'm going out of the house. I have tried to leave it unwashed for a day but I have dry ends with REALLY oily roots. If it wasn't so noticeable, I would be fine. My hair literally gets oily within a day. And for some reason I always notice other peoples hair when they haven't washed it. Is it just me? Am I crazy? I wish I had the guts to not care as much but I always try to look my best when I leave the house. I think I need help.

Even if daily washing of my hair wasn't bad for it, I'd be too lazy to wash it everyday. Once a week is how often I do it

I used to wash my hair everyday. Now I try and wash it every second or third day, it ends up too oily looking if I leave it much longer beore washing it.

I try & wash every third day, but sometimes it's every 2nd day for me - depends on how my hair feels when I wake up. I use dry shampoo as needed, fabulous product!

That's a point Emma. It does take a bit of water to wash your hair every day.

I used to wash my hair daily or every second day but that was when I hardly coloured or did heat styling. Now i can push my unwashed hair for 3 to 4 day maximum and it feels not so oily as i treat it overnight with coconut oil. My hair feels softer and healthier with less washes.

My hair would definitely not benefit from being washed and heat styled everyday. I did do this for a while when I was very young and started my first full time job. a hair wash every 2-3 days seems to suit me better now days.

Mine looks better when it's washed, but I agree that everyday is too much. A spray on conditioner and water helps the transition.

I wash twice a week and constantly get comments about how gorgeous, thick, healthy, and shiny it is. Day 1 is always worst for styling, there's no way I'd ever wash it daily.

My hair feels really dry & 'crunchy' 2 day in, especially if I've used dry shampoo. Any tips?

I can't grow my hair long so I figure if I'm getting it cut every 6-7 weeks a wash most days wont hurt. It's naturally wavy/curly but when it's longer it always straight on day 2. :(
