The most iconic decades in beauty
Confession: bh loves beauty inspiration from celebrities on the red carpet. Be it Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift and even Kim Kardashian (sometimes). But ever so often we like to hop in a time machine and look at the sultry sirens and elegant glamour girls from the past.
Turns out that organisers of Miss Italia beauty pageant feel the same way about classic beauty icons. The pageant ignited controversy this week when it banned all its contestants from wearing bikinis, and having any tattoos, body piercings or cosmetic surgery. The reason? Organisers want to return to “the classical beauty of the 1950s… and add a sober element” to the competition. They want to judge the pageant on the basis of the girls’ long legs and curvy figures, as opposed to “artificial beauty”.
Here at BH HQ, we feel there’s nothing wrong with showing your individuality through piercings and tattoos, but we also understand Miss Italia pageant’s desire to celebrate classic beauty.
In fact, we’ve been fans of the vintage make-up looks that have been making a comeback for a while now. Whether it’s taking '60s inspiration from Mad Men, or channelling your inner Marilyn Monroe, a splash of vintage make-up can add instant glamour to any look.
Not sure which era would suit you? We’ve taken a look back at the most popular decades in beauty and what made them so iconic.
The Twenties was when the world was in a crazy party mood. To complement the overdose of wine and rum, deep berry-hues were on every flapper girl’s lips, while her hair was pulled back in retro finger-wave curls.
This post-war period was all about female empowerment and it showed the most in the feminine looks that emerged. The hair was cropped to shoulder length but the vintage curls remained. Women at the time left their skin natural and dewy, but really exaggerated their eyes with a heavy dose of mascara on both top and lower lashes.
Remember Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly’s iconic glamour? The perfectly-curled hair, sun-kissed skin, thick brows and velvety red lips, this decade’s look is definitely one of the most copied over the years.
The cropped platinum pixie cut of this era really emancipated women at the time, made famous by Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn, of course. The look was minimal, fresh and youthful, with individually-defined lashes, flicked cat eyes and nude lips.
