Ingrown hairs: why you get them and how to treat them
Anyone who has ever shaved or waxed will no doubt be familiar with ingrown hairs and well aware of the pain, irritation and embarrassment they cause.
The truth is that ingrown hairs are just as common as any other skin concern. Knowing how to identify, treat and possibly prevent them is vital for keeping your legs silky smooth, your under arms carefree and your bikini area bump free.
What is an ingrown hair and why do they occur?
Lilliane Caron, Founder and Director of Bump eRaiser, explains “an ingrown hair is a hair that does not emerge from the follicle but remains embedded in the skin, usually causing inflammation”.
According to Lilliane, ingrown hairs tend to occur after hair removal when dead skin cells accumulate and form a papule as the skin heals. She explains, “Hair growing in the area gets trapped under the papule and is prevented from exiting the skin, creating an ingrown hair.”
Ingrown hairs vary from person to person and can be more prominent depending on hair and skin types.
How do I identify an ingrown hair?
“Ingrown hairs can occur on any part of the body; however they’re most common under the arms, bikini line and legs. They are also a common concern for men on the face, neck and chest,” says Lilliane. “They can appear as a red bump, pustule or pimple.”
If your hair is dark, you may even be able to spot it underneath the bump.
How do I treat an ingrown hair?
Picking at an ingrown hair or attempting to remove it without the help of a treatment can potentially cause infection or scarring. In order to avoid this, Lilliane recommends using Bump eRaiser Medi Paste, a simple and effective solution for combating ingrown hairs and keeping the skin bump free. This highly-concentrated spot treatment draws out the ingrown hairs, helping to reduce redness and swelling, as well as preventing infection. It allows the ingrown hair to be released quickly (usually within 24 hours) and easily without pain.
Lilliane adds: “An ingrown hair should only be removed if it can be easily lifted using a clean pair of tweezers and without breaking the skin.”
Lilliane’s top tips for treating and preventing ingrown hairs:
1. Exfoliate daily! The removal of dead skin cells will aid the prevention of ingrown hairs as there will be less chance of the hair getting trapped under the skin. Bump eRaiser Exfoliating Mitt, is made from Italian fabric which massages away dead skin cells, improve circulation and leave the skin feeling soft and smooth.
2. Do not touch! If removing the ingrown hair will result in skin breakage, leave it alone! Bump eRaiser Medi Paste should be applied instead to treat the area, as it will work to rapidly draw out the infection.
HANDY HINT: For rapid results apply a Band-Aid over the problem area as this will speed up healing.
3. If you’re also suffering from other bumps, pustules and pimples Bump eRaiser Medi Paste can aid these concerns, too. It will actively help reduce the redness and swelling of almost any bump. It is definitely a must-have multi-purpose product for smooth skin!
