The awkward stages of joining a gym

Like so many of us do a couple of months out from summer, I joined a gym. I thought it would motivate me to get that ‘beach body’, and I’d soon look more like Gigi Hadid and less like Mrs Potato Head.
But so far, all I’ve experienced is a whole lot of awkward…
#1 Go in to ask about prices, come out with a 12-month contract
Gym owners are clever - they never put their membership prices online so you’re forced to head there in person. Then, instead of simply being able to ask about prices, you’ll have to take a quiz, talk about your fitness goals and do a tour of the gym until you’re so disorientated, you’ll sign anything.
#2 Um, is there a dress code?
And now that you’re paying for the gym, you need to go. But what do you wear? Are tights with holes acceptable? Suddenly, that oversized t-shirt you stole from an ex-boyfriend doesn’t seem like appropriate workout wear...
#3 Where is everything?
“QUICK! Jump on a treadmill so it looks like you know what you’re doing!”
It’s hard to run like a pro when you’re secretly trying to suss out where other equipment is.
#4 Am I doing this right?
You’ve done squats before and you’re pretty sure you know how to do them properly, but now that you’re in a room with 20 people, you’re not so sure.
“Is that girl in the corner laughing at her phone or my technique?”
#5 Caught out in class
You decide to try a class and score a spot at the back so you don’t embarrass yourself. But then, the sneaky instructor turns the class around and now you’re at the front and everyone can see your undies through your tights when you bend. #THEWORST
#6 Constant text messages
They’ve got your mobile number, and boy are they going to use it. First, your phone will beep with fun things like, “how about a free PT session?” This soon gives way to special offers you have no interest in, and the dreaded “we haven’t seen you in a while…”
#7 You spot another newbie
Eventually, you’ll see someone in a similar boat who’s still figuring things out and feel a whole lot better.
Now, back to getting that beach bod...
Have you joined a gym recently? Or have you ever experienced similar awkward moments?

Gyms have been great for me, yet hygiene is a concern - sharing sweaty stuff. Try not to give them your phone #

I never felt awkward anywhere, the least in the gym. That was my playground! Ended up working in many =)

Occasionally I get dragged to the gym by my brother since he gets to bring along a non-member for free. I usually just run on the treadmill while I wait for my brother to finish the classes he does because to be honest, I don't really wanna try anything else and make a fool of myself :P

Aw...he is the greatest bro ever! I remember when I was younger and just entering this arena...my bro and our cousin (he is also same age as my bro) would take me with them, and we use to smash every single resistance machine that was there! Later on we hit the racks...oooooh, those were the days! I always hated 'cardio' machines

Gyms can be quite awkward at times...Haven't been to one in a long while. I find it much easier exercising at home anyway and I know I can do it without being judged ;)

I think there are much more exciting and adventurous ways to get exercise than going to a gym, I have been to a gym but it's not my scene and there is a lot of fakeness going on there at times too. So you will find me out walking, not at the gym.

Gosh I have not been to a gym in years. I used to go but I prefer walking these days.

I just recently had a free pass and was there for an hour but they had to hold my drivers license so I had to go back to the reception and get it back but of course I was expecting the whole do you want to join? We have a great deal!! But I was strong and said no.

The closest thing I get to going to a gym is being part of a very small clinical pilates class. And that has a very relaxed style, but also lots of one-on-one attention from the instructor

These are all the reasons why I HAVEN'T joined a gym, I'm way to worried about these things happening!

Haha I experienced this many years ago when I first signed up to the gym. I didn't have any wardrobe issues and I knew my way around the gym but I got lazy pretty quickly. I worked out I only went to the gym for 3 months out of the whole membership year.
Now only recently my fiancé and I signed up together and I will make sure we both go as often as possible!

I am fortunate to have a Fitness Passport which allows me to use many gyms for a small fee so I go through this many times. I'm not too self-conscious WHEN I do go though as I'm there for myself and not anything else!

I swear the purpose of gyms is not solely just for exercise. Everyone has to dress all good and people judge you. It's so gimmicky and expensive. They make you go in to find out their prices and they're just like salespeople! They latch onto you and never let you leave without making you feel bad. I'd go for walks around the block but people staring as they drive by made me uncomfortable.

Sunjeanie, don't feel uncomfortable! No one really cares! Australia is actually the country for the outdoor sports and workouts. People everywhere are walking, jogging, or jiglling , doing all sorts of things...also all sizes. Especially in my area. So I feel super comfortable anywhere. I pop on my bro's oversized singlet and dodgy shorts and do all the things crazy! I did yoga in the middle of the park in my bikini (yep, waxed I think before lol), was jumping around on and over the bars in the 'men's only' calisthenics park/playground (without waxed armpits last time hehe horror for them!) etc.
Just do whatever you want...but don't hurt yourself =) and take it easy. Also dress anything comfy and breathable. Not that "gym plastic" that does not allow blood to circulate properly and grows smelly bacteria

Can be so daunting joining a new gym - really need to pick one that suits your needs, which isn't easy.

It doesn't bother me to be the new person in a group fitness class etc..

Even more awkward is when you're killing it on the treadmill, and then some sweaty dude jumps on the one right next to you. This happened to me when the gym was near empty, and the guy stank so bad that I actually had to move away D:

I've always felt uncomfortable at gyms! I like going for walks or jogs instead. It's not exactly the same but it suits me much better.

This is so true.. I have decided that walking around my neighbourhood is much more my style.

i have recently joined a gym, only because they were doing a promo on their price. it was advertised, hence no going in like a headless chicken.
I am one of those who doesn't really care about other ppl's opinions/judgement. So my gym clothes ARE my bf's old tees. No one will really look anyway and if they do, so what? What you wear is not who you are. Let's concentrate on the health benefits, like my super high cholesterol level :)
for the love of cracklings
